Emerging environmental technologies

Livescience has written a series detailing 10 of the top emerging environmental technologies, covering a wide range of topics. These are my favorite ones from the list, each one has tremendous potential for helping with our environmental issues. These technologies can help reduce deforestation, slow down climate change, reduce pollution in the air, water and soil, produce clean renewable power, and turn our garbage into a valuable resource.

  • E-paper

Paper that acts more like a computer screen than paper, this technology as the potential to eliminate many of our daily paper uses like newspapers, magazines and textbooks.

  • Bioremediation

Plants have the ability to remove toxins from the soil and water, in many cases transforming the substances into nutrients for the plants.

  • Green Roofs

Green roofs help insulate the building in the summer and winter, reduce stormwater runoff, and help absorb carbon dioxide and other air pollutants.

  • Wave & Tidal power

Unlike offshore wind turbines, wave & tidal power generators are beneath the surface of the water so aren’t visible.

  • Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC)

OTEC takes adavantage of the thermal difference between cold ocean water and warmer surface water or municipal wastewater, to produce electricity.

  • Thermal Depolymerization (TDP)

TDP has the potential to create oil from any organic material. Animal waste material, non-recyclable plastics, and anything else made of carbon can be put through this process which produces oil. Rather than being used as fuel, this oil could be used to produce other types of plastics that can be recycled using more conventional means.
