TORONTO GETS HYBRID BUSES

hybridbus.jpg

This month the first of 150 hybrid buses arrived in Toronto, to be added to the TTC fleet. The TTC has already been using many biodiesel buses, but the hybrid buses are even more clean and efficient. The hybrid buses cost approximately 50% more than their conventional diesel counterparts, but are expected to save money in the long term due to their environmental benefits.

The new buses have smaller engines than regular diesel engines, and use electric motors to drive the wheels directly which eliminates the need for a transmission. The Mississauga-built hybrid buses are quieter, easier to maintain, and more fuel efficient. The new buses produce:

  • 37% less greenhouse emissions.
  • 36.3 tonnes less carbon dioxide per bus each year.
  • 30-50% less nitrogen oxide emissions.
  • 30-50% less soot particulates.
  • 20-30% less fuel consumption.
