TORONTO TO GET NEW SUBWAY TRAINS

Concept rendering of the new Toronto subway train

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has ordered 234 new subway cars to replace over 200 cars that are almost 30 years old. The first of these trains will enter service in 2009, and all will be in service by the end of 2011. These trains will be running on the University-Spadina line, the TTC hasn’t said when the Bloor-Danforth line will get new trains.

The new trains will be lighter and more efficient, in addition to having a sleeker, more modern appearance. A more aerodynamic profile will decrease wind resistance in the tunnels, and combined with a lighter train, should reduce energy consumption.
The TTC website has information about the times the public can view a mockup of the new subway train.
